Chapter 13 - The Contraction

|

Serena looked up into Silas’s ice-blue eyes, her heart hammering a sudden, frantic rhythm against her ribs.

For months, they had danced around the silent, heavy tension between them. He was a ruthless syndicate boss; she was a trauma nurse running from a shattered marriage. They belonged in entirely different universes. But the fire that had forged their bond—blood, survival, and absolute loyalty—was stronger than any normal foundation.

“Silas,” she whispered, her breath catching as his thumb gently stroked her cheek. “You live in a dangerous world. I am about to bring a child into it.”

“My world is dangerous for my enemies, Serena,” Silas replied, his voice a low, fierce rumble. “For you, and for that little girl, I will build a fortress so high God himself couldn't touch you. I want you to stay. Permanently. Not as a guest. As mine.”

Before Serena could form a reply, a sudden, agonizing cramp ripped through her lower abdomen.

It wasn't a kick. It was a vice grip that seized her entire body.

Serena gasped, her knees buckling beneath her heavy frame. She dropped the jewelry box, the platinum necklace spilling onto the expensive hardwood floor.

Silas caught her instantly, his strong arms wrapping around her waist, supporting her entirely. The softness in his eyes vanished, replaced instantly by hyper-focused intensity.

“Serena? Is it time?” Silas asked, carefully lowering her onto the plush velvet sofa.

“My water just broke,” Serena groaned, gripping the lapels of his charcoal suit, her knuckles turning white. She looked down. A puddle of clear fluid was soaking into the hem of her silk nightgown.

Silas didn't panic. He pulled his phone from his pocket and pressed a single button.

“Bring the medical team to the penthouse. Now. Have the private ambulance ready downstairs,” Silas barked into the phone, tossing it onto the coffee table.

He knelt on the floor beside the sofa, taking both of Serena’s trembling hands in his.

“Breathe, Serena. Look at me. Just like you told Marcus in the study. Breathe,” Silas commanded gently.

Another contraction hit, harder and faster than the first. Serena cried out, squeezing Silas’s hands with surprising strength.

“They’re too close together,” Serena gasped, the nurse in her analyzing the pain even through the agony. “It’s happening too fast, Silas. She’s coming right now.”

Silas’s jaw tightened. He knew what that meant. The penthouse was equipped for emergencies, but delivering a baby requires a sterile environment and surgical tools if complications arise.

Suddenly, the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse rattled violently.

It wasn't the winter wind.

It was the distinct, heavy thumping of helicopter rotors hovering just outside the glass.

Silas’s head snapped toward the windows. A massive, unmarked black helicopter was hovering level with the penthouse, its side door sliding open. Inside, men in tactical gear were aiming heavy grappling launchers at the reinforced glass.

Simultaneously, the blaring, high-pitched screech of the building’s emergency security alarms began to wail through the penthouse speakers.
