Chapter 14 - The Ghost From Connecticut

|

“Boss!” The voice of Silas’s head of security blared through the intercom on the wall. “We have a breach! Armed hostiles in the lobby, and they’ve compromised the elevator shaft!”

Silas didn't hesitate. He pulled the heavy pistol from his shoulder holster, racking the slide with a terrifying, metallic click.

“Vargas,” Serena gasped through the blinding pain of another contraction, her mind flashing back to the massacre in Connecticut.

“No,” Silas said, his eyes fixed on the men in the helicopter. “Vargas is dead. I had him killed a month ago to tie up loose ends.”

He stood up, standing directly between Serena and the glass windows.

THUNK. THUNK.

Two heavy magnetic grappling hooks smashed against the bulletproof glass, latching onto the reinforced steel frames. The men in the helicopter were preparing to blow the windows and breach the penthouse.

“If it isn't Vargas, who is it?!” Serena cried out, gripping her stomach.

Silas’s phone buzzed on the coffee table. The caller ID was a scrambled international number. Silas picked it up, keeping his gun trained on the windows, and hit speakerphone.

“Hello, Silas.”

The voice echoing from the phone was distorted, but the arrogant, trembling cadence was unmistakable.

Serena’s blood ran entirely cold. The pain of the contraction momentarily vanished, replaced by sheer, paralyzing shock.

It was Matthias.

“Matthias?” Serena whispered, staring at the phone in horror.

“Hello, darling,” Matthias’s voice sneered through the speaker. “Did you really think I was just going to disappear? Did you think you could steal my life, take my money, and hide in a glass tower with this thug?”

Silas’s expression turned into a mask of pure, unadulterated murder. “You are supposed to be at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, Matthias. How did you survive Vargas?”

“Vargas was a brute. But he loved money more than revenge,” Matthias laughed, a manic, unhinged sound. “I made him a deal. I told him if he let me live, I would help his rivals in the Sinaloa cartel dismantle his entire operation from the inside. And I did. I climbed my way up, Silas. I am no longer a pathetic banker. I am a partner in the largest syndicate in Mexico.”

The glass of the penthouse windows began to crack under the immense pressure of the grappling hooks pulling against the frame. Small spiderwebs of fractured glass spread across the reinforced panes.

“And now,” Matthias continued, his voice dripping with venom. “I have the resources to take back what is mine. The money. My child. And I’m going to make you watch me throw your new boyfriend out of that window, Serena.”
