Chapter 15 - The Lockdown

|

“Kill the feed!” Silas barked at the intercom. The call abruptly cut off.

He turned to Serena, his icy eyes blazing with a protective fury she had never seen before. “They are not touching you. I promise you that.”

Silas grabbed a heavy remote control from the coffee table and slammed a red button in the center.

Instantly, thick, solid steel blast shields began to descend from the ceiling, sliding down over the floor-to-ceiling windows. The men in the helicopter realized what was happening. They detonated the breaching charges on the glass just as the steel shields locked into place.

The explosion rocked the penthouse, sending a massive shockwave through the room, but the steel shields held firm. The roar of the helicopter was muffled, blocked out by the heavy armor.

The penthouse was now a sealed vault.

“The windows are secure, Boss, but they are blowing the elevator doors!” The security chief yelled over the intercom. Gunfire began to echo from the hallway outside.

“Hold the corridor!” Silas ordered. “No one gets past the steel doors!”

Silas dropped to his knees beside Serena. She was hyperventilating, her body trembling uncontrollably as another brutal contraction tore through her. The stress, the adrenaline, and the terror were accelerating the labor.

“I need to push, Silas,” Serena sobbed, tears streaming down her face. “I can't hold it back. She’s coming right now.”

Silas threw his suit jacket onto the floor and rolled up his sleeves. He was a man accustomed to taking lives, to orchestrating violence and chaos. But as he looked at the terrified woman he loved, he focused every ounce of his formidable willpower into becoming the anchor she needed.

“Then we do this right here,” Silas said gently, positioning himself at the end of the sofa. “You are the best nurse I know, Serena. You walked me through a bullet wound in a hallway. Walk me through this. What do I do?”

Serena closed her eyes, fighting through the blinding pain, forcing her clinical training to override her panic.

“Support the head,” Serena gasped, her hands gripping the velvet cushions. “When I push... catch her. Don't pull. Just guide her.”

Outside the heavy steel doors of the penthouse, the gunfire escalated into a deafening roar. Explosions shook the floorboards. Matthias’s mercenaries were fighting a bloody, close-quarters battle against Silas’s elite security team.

The sound of death and violence raged just feet away, but inside the center of the room, life was demanding to be born.

“Okay, Serena,” Silas said, his hands steady, his voice a calm, deep rumble in the chaos. “On the next contraction. Push with everything you have.”
