Chapter 9 - The Breakdown in the Driveway

|

I stood at the grand bay window of the living room, watching through the glass as the scene unfolded under the harsh driveway floodlights.

The rain was pouring down now, hammering against the gravel circle where three luxury cars were parked.

The security guards tossed four leather suitcases onto the wet stone steps.

Margaret was screaming at the top of her lungs, her expensive hair ruinously flattened by the downpour, her diamond necklaces dripping with rainwater. She was trying to drag her heavy luggage toward her Mercedes, but the vehicle’s remote starter was completely unresponsive—Evelyn had already initiated the repossession protocol on all corporate-leased vehicles.

“Daniel! Unlock the car!” Margaret shrieked, wiping water from her mascara-stained eyes.

Daniel stood in the middle of the driveway, soaked to the bone, staring blankly at the ground. He looked completely hollowed out, the arrogance entirely drained from his posture.

Vanessa stood a few feet away, her arms wrapped tightly around her stomach, shivering in her thin designer dress.

“You lied to me!” Vanessa screamed at Daniel, her voice cutting through the sound of the falling rain. “You told me she was weak! You told me you had everything locked in your name! You brought me into this house, promised me a nursery on the second floor, and now we’re standing in the rain like bums!”

Daniel turned on her, his face contorted in rage. “I lost fourteen million dollars tonight because of your greedy ass! You couldn't wait until the divorce was final! You had to parade your pregnancy in front of her face!”

“Don't you blame this on me!” Vanessa screamed back, slapping his arm frantically. “You were the one who couldn't keep your hands off me while she was at the clinic! You're a loser, Daniel! A broke, pathetic loser!”

I watched them tear each other apart in the mud. The glorious love affair that had destroyed my marriage was evaporating the second the money vanished.

Evelyn walked up behind me, holding two crystal glasses filled with eighteen-year-old scotch.

“A penny for your thoughts, CEO Vance?” Evelyn asked softly, handing me a glass.

I took a slow sip, watching Daniel stumble backward as Margaret began hitting him with her leather handbag.

“I thought it would hurt more,” I admitted quietly. “I thought seeing them together would break my heart.”

Evelyn chuckled, clinking her glass against mine. “Heartbreak is an expensive emotion, Claire. You just traded yours for total victory.”
