Chapter 16 - The Unopened Box

|

I stepped closer to the coffee table, looking down at the strange container.

The box was made of heavy, antique ebony wood, sealed with a intricate brass lock. Inlaid into the center of the wooden lid was a crest—a roaring lion holding a broken arrow.

My heart skipped a beat.

It was my grandfather’s private personal seal. A mark he used only on his most confidential personal correspondence before he died.

“Where did this come from?” I whispered, my fingers hovering over the cold brass lock.

Evelyn pulled out her phone, immediately calling security. “Check the hallway cameras now. Who delivered a box to the VIP suite?”

Beside the ebony box lay a small cream-colored envelope, sealed with red wax.

I picked up the envelope, broke the wax seal, and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment paper.

The handwriting was written in dark blue fountain ink—sharp, precise, and hauntingly familiar.

Claire,

If you are reading this, it means you have successfully removed Daniel Mercer from Vance Development, exactly as I anticipated you would.

My hand began to tremble. It was my grandfather’s handwriting. Dated four years ago—just two weeks before his unexpected death.

Do not celebrate your victory yet, my clever girl.

Daniel Mercer was never the true architect of the plan to ruin our family. He was merely a greedy pawn, placed in your path by someone far more powerful, far richer, and far more dangerous.

Someone who sits at the highest level of the global financial elite—and someone who holds the other half of Vance Global’s original charter.

Inside this box is the key to a vault in Zurich. Inside that vault, you will find the truth about your father’s death, the secret history of our family empire, and the name of the man who is currently buying up controlling shares of your company from the shadows.

The game hasn't ended, Claire. It has only just begun.

Look behind you.

Your loving Grandfather, Thomas Vance.

My breath caught violently in my throat.

I dropped the letter onto the table and spun around toward the dark glass windows overlooking the city streets below.

Outside, parked across the street under the dim streetlight, sat a sleek black limousine with tinted windows.

As I watched, the rear window rolled down an inch.

A hand, wearing a massive gold ring bearing the exact same lion crest, rested against the window frame—before the car slowly pulled away into the rainy night, leaving me standing in the shadow of an empire that was far more dangerous than I had ever dared to imagine.
