Chapter 7 - The Trap Sprung

“You bitch!” Daniel roared, lunging across the mahogany dining table, his hands reaching for my neck.
Before his fingers could even cross the silver centerpiece, the heavy double doors of the dining room swung open with a deafening bang.
Two massive, suit-clad security guards stepped into the room, instantly blocking Daniel's path. Behind them walked Evelyn Shaw, holding a sleek black tablet and a leather briefcase.
“Touch her, Mr. Mercer, and you’ll be spending the night in county jail on aggravated assault charges,” Evelyn said, her voice dropping like an anvil in the quiet room.
Daniel stumbled back, knocking his chair over. It crashed heavily against the hardwood floor.
“This is fraud!” Daniel screamed, pointing a shaking finger at Evelyn. “She tricked me! She swapped the legal documents! I’m calling my lawyer!”
Evelyn smiled calmly, adjusting her glasses as she tapped the screen of her tablet.
“You can call whomever you like, Daniel. But as a licensed notary and officer of the court, I was standing right outside that door monitoring the live feed from the security cameras above your head.”
She pointed up toward the ornate ceiling molding, where a tiny, green recording light blinked steadily.
“You reviewed the documents, you signed them willingly on camera, and you explicitly instructed your ex-wife to execute her signature in front of witnesses,” Evelyn stated with ice-cold precision. “The agreement is signed, notarized, and legally binding as of three minutes ago.”
Margaret clutched her heart, slumping back into her chair. “The money... Daniel, the fourteen million... where is it?”
“It’s frozen, Margaret,” I answered, setting my water glass down with a soft click. “My forensic team executed a temporary freezing order on your offshore accounts twenty minutes ago, right after Daniel put his pen down.”

Vanessa’s voice turned high-pitched, almost hysterically shrill. “Frozen? What do you mean frozen? Daniel, you told me we were rich! You told me you owned this house!”
Daniel stood frozen, his chest heaving, his expensive suit looking suddenly ill-fitting on his trembling frame. He was stripped of his money, his company, his home, and his dignity—all in less than ten minutes.
