Emma had eventually tired of drawing and was now asleep on the sofa, her head resting on a throw pillow, Barnaby the dog's picture clutched loosely in her hand.
Alessandro and I stepped out onto the wide balcony, leaning against the glass railing. The city sprawled out beneath us, a chaotic, beautiful masterpiece of human ambition. But up here, far above the noise, it was completely serene.

I smiled, feeling a profound, unshakeable sense of security. The wars were over. The ghosts were banished. The heavy crown of the Moretti empire had been melted down and forged into a shield, protecting the life we had built together.

I rested my head against his chest, wrapping my arms around his waist. He kissed the top of my head, holding me tight as we watched the sun set over our city.
The rain was gone. The storm had passed. And for the first time in our lives, the future was entirely, beautifully, safe.
