Chapter 9: The Ring on the Table

Chapter 9: The Ring on the Table
Margaret looked like she had been physically struck by a train. Her face aged ten years in ten seconds.
“You believed him because you wanted to,” Olivia said, her voice steady, cutting through the silence.
Margaret’s lips trembled. Her hands shook violently in her lap.
“I thought… I thought I was protecting my son from an opportunist.”
“No,” Olivia corrected quietly. “You were helping him destroy a mother.”
Jason’s expression shifted wildly. The fear became pure, unadulterated anger. The anger became vicious blame.
“You all act shocked!” He pointed a shaking, accusing finger at Olivia, pacing the floor. “She trapped me! You got pregnant right when my company was negotiating the massive European merger! You anchored me down!”
Olivia’s laugh was small, broken, and completely hollow. It held the grief of a thousand dead dreams.
“Our daughter was planned, Jason. We picked out her name together in Paris.”
Jason’s eyes flicked nervously toward his mother, seeking an ally that was no longer there.
“Plans change. Business changes.”
Olivia looked down at her left hand.
The heavy, flawless four-carat diamond ring had once felt like a beautiful promise of an eternal future. A symbol of unbreakable love.
Now, it felt like cold, heavy evidence from a violent crime scene.
She slowly, deliberately slid the diamond off her finger.
Jason’s eyes widened in genuine, terrified panic. He realized the optics of what was happening.
“Olivia, stop. Don’t be dramatic. We can fix this.”
Olivia placed the ring on the table.

The metallic clink of the platinum against the wood was soft. But it was the most absolute, final sound in the world.
“I am done being quiet so you can call me dramatic when I finally speak.”
