Chapter 7: The Forgery

Jason let out a loud, theatrical sigh, running a shaking hand through his expensive haircut.

“See?” he said, looking around the table, desperately trying to rewrite the narrative in real-time. “It’s fine. Everything is fine. We just needed to be sure.”

Olivia opened her eyes and looked at him with absolute disgust.

His relief was not for her. It was not for the sanctity of their marriage. It was entirely, selfishly for himself.

Dr. Ellis did not pack up his bag. He did not sit down.

“But that is not the only result in this envelope.”

Jason’s forced, pathetic relief died instantly on his face.

Margaret turned her head slowly, the coldness returning to her eyes.

“What else could there possibly be?”

Dr. Ellis pulled a second, heavily redacted sheet of paper from the thick envelope.

“When Jason requested the expedited paternity test through my private office, he also legally requested that copies of the billing records and the DNA profiles be sent to an alternate, private address.”

Olivia looked up, her voice a quiet, confused whisper.

“I never knew that. I never signed off on alternate addresses.”

Dr. Ellis nodded gently, his eyes filled with sorrow for the young woman.

“You were not supposed to know, Olivia.”

Jason’s voice sharpened, his panic leaking through as a loud, aggressive bark.

“That is strictly confidential medical information, Samuel! You are violating HIPAA!”

The doctor looked at him with absolute, unfiltered disgust.

“You waived your right to any medical confidentiality the exact moment you forged your wife’s signature on the legal consent forms.”
