Chapter 2: The Silent Husband

Chapter 2: The Silent Husband

Olivia slowly turned her gaze away from Margaret and looked directly at the man seated to the older woman’s right.
Her husband. Jason.
He was dressed in a perfectly tailored, dark charcoal suit, his posture rigid.
But his head was lowered.
He did not stand up to offer his pregnant wife his seat.
He did not raise his voice to defend the mother of his unborn child.
He did not push his mother away or demand an apology.
He did not even look at Olivia. He simply stared down at his untouched porcelain dinner plate as if the intricate gold-leaf pattern held the answers to the universe.
Margaret folded her arms confidently, entirely unbothered by the suffocating tension she had just manufactured.
“You came into this family with absolutely nothing,” Margaret continued, her tone dripping with aristocratic disdain. “No name. No wealth. No pedigree. And now you expect us to blindly hand over the Bennett legacy to a child that might not even carry our blood.”
Olivia ignored the older woman completely.
Her entire universe had narrowed down to the silent man in the charcoal suit.
“Jason,” Olivia pleaded, her voice cracking, pleading for the safety she thought they had built together. “Say something. Please. Tell her to stop.”
Jason’s jaw tightened.
The silence stretched, thick and unbearable, pulling the air out of Olivia’s lungs.
Finally, Jason lifted his eyes.
His expression was completely blank. The warmth, the love, the charm that had won her heart three years ago was entirely gone.
His voice was quiet, steady, and it hurt worse than a physical strike across the face.
“Maybe… maybe we should just wait for proof.”
Olivia stared at him.
Her heart slammed painfully against her ribs.
It was as if the man she had kissed that morning had died, replaced instantly by a cold, calculating stranger wearing her husband’s face.

“You promised,” she whispered, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes. “You promised you trusted me.”
Before Jason could offer another pathetic excuse, a small, mechanical sound broke the quiet.
