Chapter 16 - The Accountant's Revenge

|

The following morning, the financial world of Boston woke up to a seismic shift.

Adelaide sat in her office, sipping espresso as she legally dismantled Jones Financial. With the documents Rockford had signed in terror the night before, she transferred all the liquid assets, the commercial real estate deeds, and the client portfolios directly into a newly formed, fully legitimate holding company owned exclusively by Adelaide Moretti.

She didn't just take their money; she took their legacy.

By noon, news networks were reporting the sudden, catastrophic collapse of Jones Financial. Rockford Jones was under federal investigation for embezzlement—tips anonymously provided by Adelaide, complete with heavily encrypted evidence that left the Moretti syndicate completely untouched.

Mateo walked into her office, wearing a casual dark sweater, looking relaxed and deeply satisfied.

“It’s done,” Adelaide said, leaning back in her ergonomic chair. “Jones Financial is officially a subsidiary of Moretti Enterprises. The money is clean, and the feds are tearing my father’s house apart looking for him.”

Mateo smiled, walking around the desk. “And Evelyn and Chloe?”

“They tried to check into the Four Seasons on their credit cards last night,” Adelaide smirked. “The cards were declined. My contacts tell me they spent the night sleeping in the lobby of a bus station before security threw them out.”

Mateo let out a low chuckle. He pulled Adelaide out of her chair, wrapping his arms around her waist.

“You are a very dangerous woman to cross, Mrs. Moretti,” he teased softly.

“I’m an accountant,” she replied, wrapping her arms around his neck. “We believe in balancing the books. They owed a debt for fifteen years of cruelty. I just collected it.”

Mateo’s expression turned serious. He looked deeply into her eyes, the dark intensity returning.

“They told me to send the ugly one, assuming I would reject her,” Mateo whispered, leaning in so his lips brushed against hers. “They didn't realize they were sending me the most beautiful, brilliant woman in the world.”

He kissed her, deeply and passionately, sealing the victory they had won together.
