Chapter 10 - The Syndicate Dinner

|

Silas didn't last ten minutes in the soundproof basement. Mateo didn't let Adelaide watch the interrogation, but when he returned to the master suite, his knuckles were bruised, and he had a name.

Dante.

Dante was Mateo’s underboss. He was a man who had stood beside Mateo for ten years, smiled in his face, and secretly orchestrated the theft of fifteen million dollars to build his own rival faction.

“We can't just shoot him,” Adelaide said the next evening as she helped Mateo button his shirt. “If you kill your underboss without absolute public proof, the other families will think you’ve gone paranoid. You’ll lose the loyalty of the syndicate.”

“So what do you suggest, my brilliant wife?” Mateo asked, his hands resting on her hips.

“We invite them all to dinner,” Adelaide said, her eyes glinting with a dangerous light. “All the capos. And my family. We put them all in the same room, and I spring the trap.”

Two nights later, the grand dining hall of the Moretti estate was filled with the most dangerous men in New England. The long mahogany table was set with crystal and silver. At the far end sat Rockford, Evelyn, and Chloe, looking terrified and deeply out of place among the hardened mafia bosses.

Dante sat to Mateo’s right, laughing loudly, playing the role of the loyal friend perfectly.

Adelaide sat to Mateo’s left. She wore a stunning, deep crimson gown, her scar proudly exposed. Several of the capos sneered when she entered, whispering about her face, but Mateo’s icy glare silenced them instantly.

During the main course, Dante raised a glass of heavy red wine.

“To our Boss,” Dante boomed, offering a charming smile. “And to his new bride. May she bring him... peace.”

The insult was thinly veiled. He meant she was too weak for this world.

Adelaide didn't shrink away. She picked up her own glass and stood up. The room quieted down.

“Thank you, Dante,” Adelaide said, her voice ringing clearly across the hall. “But I don't bring peace. I bring accountability. In fact, I’ve spent the last week reviewing the syndicate’s offshore accounts. And I found something fascinating about your recent investments in Cyprus.”

Dante’s charming smile instantly vanished. The color drained completely from his face.

The trap was set.
