Chapter 13 - The Bait

|

With Dante secured in the warehouse, the immediate threat to Mateo’s life was neutralized. But the Jones family still sat at the end of the dining table, surrounded by armed men, completely aware that their lives hung by a thread.

Mateo pulled out his chair and sat back down, casually wiping a drop of Dante’s blood from his cufflink with a linen napkin.

“Now,” Mateo said, turning his attention to Rockford. “What do we do with you?”

Rockford fell out of his chair, dropping to his knees on the marble floor. He crawled toward Mateo, tears streaming down his flushed face.

“Please, Mr. Moretti!” Rockford begged, his voice cracking. “It was Evelyn’s idea! She was sleeping with Dante! They manipulated me! I didn't know they were going to steal it, I thought it was just a temporary loan!”

Evelyn shrieked, “You cowardly bastard! You signed the papers!”

Chloe was sobbing openly, mascara running down her perfect face. “Adelaide, please! Tell him to let us go! We’re your family!”

Adelaide looked at her sister. She looked at the woman who had laughed at her scar, who had mocked her clothes, who had gleefully sent her to what she assumed was a slaughterhouse just weeks prior.

Adelaide walked over to her father, looking down at him with absolute disgust.

“You aren't my family,” Adelaide said softly. “You sold me to cover your own incompetence. You let them call me the ugly sister, the useless daughter. You thought I had no value.”

Rockford reached out to grab the hem of her dress. “Adelaide, I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!”

Adelaide stepped back, refusing to let him touch her.

She turned to Mateo. “The debt was fifteen million dollars. Plus interest for the betrayal. I want Jones Financial. I want the deed to their estate, the keys to their cars, and the clothes off their backs. I want them stripped of every single dime they own.”

Mateo smiled, a dark, proud expression. He looked at his capos.

“You heard the Donna,” Mateo said. “Draft the paperwork. By tomorrow morning, the Jones family doesn't exist in the financial world anymore.”
