Chapter 12 - An Unlikely Partnership

The dining room exploded into chaos.
Several capos reached for their weapons, shouting in Italian. Dante pulled his gun instantly, aiming it directly at Adelaide.
“You stupid bitch!” Dante roared.
Before Dante could even pull the trigger, Mateo moved with terrifying, blinding speed. He didn't draw a gun. He grabbed a heavy silver steak knife from the table and hurled it across the space.
The blade buried itself deep into Dante’s shoulder.
Dante screamed, dropping his weapon as the impact threw him backward over his chair.
Mateo vaulted the table, landing on top of his traitorous underboss. He grabbed Dante by the throat, pinning him to the marble floor.
“You stole from me,” Mateo snarled, his voice vibrating with absolute, demonic fury. “You used that pathetic fool Rockford to funnel my money, and then you tried to have my wife assassinated when she found out!”
The other capos immediately drew their weapons and aimed them at Dante’s loyalists, realizing the underboss had orchestrated a coup. The rebellion was crushed before it could even begin.
At the other end of the table, Chloe was screaming hysterically. Rockford was hyperventilating, clutching his chest. Evelyn tried to run for the grand double doors, but two of Mateo’s guards stepped in front of her, raising their assault rifles.
“Sit down, Evelyn,” Adelaide commanded, her voice cutting through the panic like a blade.
Evelyn slowly backed away from the guns and collapsed into her chair, sobbing in terror.
Mateo hauled a bleeding, groaning Dante to his feet, handing him over to Marco and the guards.
“Take him to the warehouse,” Mateo ordered coldly. “He doesn't die until he tells us who else is involved.”
As they dragged the traitor away, Mateo turned back to Adelaide. He ignored the chaos, the terrified family members, and the stunned capos. He walked over to his wife, gently taking her hand.

“You are the most terrifying woman I have ever met,” Mateo whispered, leaning in to kiss her softly in front of everyone.
Adelaide smiled against his lips. “I’m an accountant, Mateo. We don't like missing money.”
