Chapter 28 - A New Foundation

|

The morning sun filtered through the brand-new windows of our home, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. The contractors were already busy repairing the damage from Thorne's assault, but the house felt remarkably peaceful.

Evelyn and I sat at the kitchen table, drinking coffee and reading the physical copy of the City Chronicle.

The front page featured Lily’s byline in bold, black letters. The headline read: THE FALL OF OBSIDIAN: HOW A NEW CARTEL WAS DISMANTLED IN 24 HOURS.

"It's a masterpiece," Evelyn said softly, tracing her finger over Lily's name. "She didn't just expose him. She dismantled the entire corrupt system that allowed him to exist."

"She’s a better writer than I ever was a strategist," I admitted with immense pride.

Lily walked into the kitchen, looking exhausted but happier than I had seen her in years. The heavy weight that had rested on her shoulders since the events at the university had finally lifted. She had faced her trauma, faced the monsters in the dark, and emerged victorious.

"Good morning, Pulitzer," I teased, pushing a mug of coffee toward her.

Lily rolled her eyes, but a bright smile broke across her face. "It's just an article, Dad. Don't jinx it."

"It's not just an article," Evelyn corrected her gently. "You saved lives, Lily. You protected this city."

Lily took a sip of her coffee, looking at both of us.

"We protected it," she said. "Together."

I looked around the kitchen, at the life we had fought so desperately to preserve. The Ghost was truly dead now. There were no more empires to dismantle, no more shadows to fear. We had proven that we could defend our peace without sacrificing our humanity.

"So," Lily said, setting her mug down. "What do we do now?"

Evelyn smiled, reaching across the table to take my hand.

"Now?" Evelyn said. "Now, we just live."

I squeezed her hand, feeling the solid, undeniable truth of her words.

For the first time in my life, there were no enemies waiting in the dark, no secrets threatening to tear us apart. There was only the bright, limitless morning, and the family I loved more than life itself.

We were finally free.
