Chapter 20 - The Ghost's Shadow

We retrieved the micro-SD card exactly where Ethan said it would be. Vincent set up a secure, air-gapped laptop in our study to analyze the data. As lines of code and financial records began scrolling across the screen, the true magnitude of Marcus Thorne’s operation became terrifyingly clear.
He wasn't just filling Jonathan Hale's vacuum; he was weaponizing it.
"Look at this," Vincent said, pointing to a series of wire transfers. "He’s been buying off the port authority, local judges, and two state senators. He’s building an impenetrable fortress of corruption."
I leaned over Vincent’s shoulder, staring at the names of the shell companies. A chilling realization washed over me as I recognized the structuring of the accounts. The exact routing methods, the specific offshore banks, the way the dummy corporations were layered to obscure the true owner.
"I know these tactics," I whispered, a sickening feeling settling in my stomach.
Evelyn walked into the room, holding two cups of coffee. "What is it, Dominic?"
"Thorne didn't learn this from Jonathan Hale," I said, stepping back from the monitor. "He learned it from me."
"What do you mean?" Lily asked.
"Fifteen years ago, before I dismantled my own empire, I wrote a contingency protocol for laundering assets during a federal raid. I kept it highly classified. Only my top lieutenants ever saw it." I ran a hand through my hair, the guilt of my past crashing over me anew. "Thorne was a low-level enforcer. He shouldn't have known this system. Unless..."
"Unless he stole a copy of your playbook before you exiled him," Vincent finished, his expression grim.
"He’s not just trying to take over the city," I realized. "He’s trying to become the next Ghost. He’s using my own blueprint to build his cartel."
"Which means he knows exactly how you think," Evelyn said, setting the coffee cups down with a trembling hand.
Suddenly, the security alarm in the house began to blare. A piercing, high-pitched wail that indicated a perimeter breach.
I looked at the monitor displaying our exterior cameras. Three black SUVs had just smashed through the front gates of our property. Heavily armed men in tactical gear were pouring out, advancing on the front door.

"They found us," Lily gasped.
"Vincent, secure the hard drive," I ordered, my voice dropping into the cold, calculated cadence of a man preparing for war. "Evelyn, get Lily to the panic room in the basement. Now."
