Chapter 24 - Sebastian's Release

|
I had sent Evelyn, Lily, and Vincent to a secondary, highly secure location under federal protection, utilizing a contact Elena Ruiz had provided. I was not going to the shipyard to fight a war; I was going to buy them the time they needed for the article to hit the morning papers and the FBI to finalize their arrest warrants.
I stood in the shadows of the abandoned warehouse on Pier 44, the smell of salt and rust heavy in the night air. The rain had stopped, leaving the city slick and cold.
A black sedan pulled into the shipyard, its headlights cutting through the darkness. But it wasn't Marcus Thorne's vehicle.
The car stopped, and a solitary figure stepped out, walking casually toward the warehouse.
It was Sebastian Voss.
He was wearing a tailored suit, looking exactly as he had before he went to prison.
I stepped out of the shadows, my hand resting near my stun baton. "You're supposed to be in a federal penitentiary."
"Elena Ruiz is a very pragmatic woman," Sebastian said, stopping a few feet away. "When Lily's article hit the editor's desk, and the FBI realized you had drained Thorne’s accounts, they needed a tactical advisor who understood cartel mechanics to orchestrate the city-wide raids tonight. In exchange for my full cooperation, I was granted an emergency, heavily monitored parole."
"You're a free man?"
"I wear an ankle monitor, and I have a strict curfew," Sebastian smirked. "But yes. The world is a strange place, Dominic."
"Why are you here, Sebastian?"
"Because you challenged Marcus Thorne to a duel at an abandoned shipyard," Sebastian said, shaking his head in disbelief. "You are trying to act like a martyr, Dominic. But you don't have to die tonight to prove you aren't the Ghost anymore."
"He won't stop hunting my family until he’s in handcuffs or in the ground."
"He’s already finished," Sebastian promised, standing beside me. "The FBI is currently raiding every single Obsidian warehouse in the city. Without his money, his mercenaries are abandoning ship. Thorne is coming here because you are the only piece of his pride left to destroy."

"Then let him try," I said.
"We will let him try," Sebastian corrected me, unbuttoning his jacket to reveal a Kevlar vest. "I owed you my life for saving me at the university. I'm here to pay my debts."
