Chapter 11 - The Unfinished Article

|

The bustling atmosphere of the city newsroom was a stark contrast to the quiet tension in my home. The air was filled with the clatter of keyboards, ringing phones, and the sharp voices of editors demanding deadlines.

Lily sat at her desk, entirely absorbed in the glowing screen of her computer. Spread across her desk were printed ledgers, shipping manifests, and highlighted corporate filings.

I walked up behind her, holding two cups of coffee.

"Don't you ever take a break?" I asked.

Lily jumped slightly, then relaxed when she saw me.

"Dad. What are you doing here?"

"Bringing you caffeine," I said, setting the cup down. "And seeing where my daughter spends all her time."

She took the coffee with a grateful smile.

"I’m close, Dad. Obsidian Logistics isn’t just buying warehouses. They are establishing a massive smuggling route through the city’s shipping ports. And they are using the exact same legal loopholes that Jonathan Hale’s lawyers set up five years ago."

I pulled up an empty chair and sat next to her.

"Lily, we need to talk about this story."

She paused, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. She studied my face, her journalistic instincts kicking in.

"You know something about this, don't you? That’s why you’re really here."

"I know that the people behind Obsidian are not white-collar criminals like the university board," I said carefully, keeping my voice low. "They are violent, unpredictable, and deeply entrenched in the cartel world. It’s not just a matter of exposing them in print. They will retaliate."

Lily turned to face me fully.

"You taught me not to be afraid of shadows, Dad. You and Mom stood up to a corrupt empire and tore it down. Are you telling me to look the other way now?"

"I am telling you to be smart," I replied, the fear for her safety tightening my chest. "You are shining a flashlight into a cave without knowing what kind of bear is sleeping inside."

"I know exactly what’s inside," Lily said stubbornly. "Men who think money and intimidation give them the right to ruin people’s lives. I’m not backing down."

"Vincent came to the house last night," I confessed. "The man running Obsidian is named Marcus Thorne. I knew him in my past life. He is dangerous, Lily."

Her eyes widened slightly, but she didn't flinch.

"Then it’s a good thing I have the Ghost’s training," she whispered. "I’m publishing the preliminary findings on Friday. I won't be intimidated."
