Chapter 27

CHAPTER 28 — The Midnight Panic
Pregnancy brought immense joy, but it also brought the inevitable ghosts of anxiety.
At 2:00 AM on a rainy Tuesday, Julia's phone rang.
"Mom?" Mia’s voice was thick with panic and tears.
"I'm here. What's wrong? Is it the baby?" Julia sat up instantly, her heart racing.
"The baby is fine," Mia choked out. "Elias is asleep. I just... I woke up and I couldn't breathe. Mom, what if I mess this up? What if I have some hidden part of him inside me? What if I accidentally teach this baby how to be afraid?"
It was the deepest, most terrifying fear of any survivor.
Julia didn't tell her she was being silly. She didn't dismiss the fear.
"Mia, listen to my voice," Julia said, her tone steady and deeply anchoring. "You are not him. You have never been him."
"But the DNA—"
"DNA doesn't make a parent. Choices do," Julia interrupted gently. "You have spent your entire adult life choosing empathy, choosing kindness, choosing Elias. You chose to break the cycle. That baby is not going to inherit a legacy of fear, Mia, because you already burned that legacy to the ground."
Mia’s ragged breathing slowly began to even out over the phone.
"You know what love looks like," Julia continued softly. "You know how to protect. You are going to be the most magnificent mother, because you know exactly the kind of mother you needed to be."
May you like
"Thank you," Mia whispered, the panic finally dissolving into the quiet night. "I love you, Mom."
"I love you more. Go to sleep, my brave girl."
