Chapter 26

CHAPTER 27 — The Two Pink Lines
It was a Sunday evening in late October.
Julia was at Mia and Elias's house for dinner. The large dining table Mia had dreamed of was finally there, covered in plates of pasta, half-empty wine glasses, and warm laughter.
Elias cleared his throat, standing up with a slightly nervous, radiant smile.
"Julia," Elias said, reaching down to take Mia’s hand. "We actually asked you over tonight for a specific reason."
Mia looked up at her mother. Her eyes were shining with tears, but her smile was blinding.
"Mom," Mia whispered. "I'm pregnant."
The room seemed to stop spinning.
Julia dropped her fork. It clattered loudly against her porcelain plate.
She stood up, her hands flying to her mouth, tears instantly spilling over her eyelashes. She rounded the table and pulled her daughter into a fierce, desperate embrace, Elias wrapping his long arms around both of them.
"A baby," Julia sobbed happily into Mia’s shoulder. "Oh, my darling. A baby."
"You're going to be a grandmother," Mia laughed, wiping her own tears.
Julia pulled back, framing her daughter's face in her hands. She looked at the strong, beautiful, unbroken woman standing before her.
