CHAPTER 25 — The Gold Chain

A few months later, Julia sat at her vanity, holding the simple gold chain that had belonged to Lin.

She had kept it safe since the wedding, but it felt incomplete sitting in a velvet box.

She drove downtown to a small, independent jeweler.

"How can I help you today?" the jeweler, a kind-eyed older man, asked.

Julia placed the gold chain on the velvet mat.

"This necklace has a lot of history," Julia explained softly. "It represents survival. But I want it to represent the future now. I want to add something to it."

They spent an hour looking at designs.

Finally, Julia chose a small, brilliant-cut sapphire, set in a delicate, modern gold bezel, to be permanently fused to the center of the vintage chain.

When she picked it up a week later, the transformation was breathtaking. The old, sturdy gold carried the bright, vivid spark of the new stone perfectly.

She drove to Mia’s house and handed her the small box.

Mia opened it, her eyes widening. "Mom... it’s beautiful. The sapphire..."

"The gold is where we came from," Julia said, touching the chain gently. "The strength that kept us alive. But the sapphire is yours, Mia. It's the new life you're building. You don't just have to wear the survival anymore. You get to wear the joy, too."

Mia fastened the necklace around her neck. It rested perfectly against her collarbone.

She didn't take it off again.
