CHAPTER 23 — The Foundation of Home

When Mia and Elias returned from their honeymoon, they closed on their first house.

It was a modest, charming craftsman-style home with a wrap-around porch and a sprawling backyard. It was nothing like the cold, cavernous, gated mansion Mia had been born into.

On a Saturday afternoon, Julia arrived in paint-splattered overalls, carrying two trays of iced tea.

Inside, music was playing from a portable speaker. Mia and Elias were in the living room, covered in specks of "Warm Linen" paint, laughing as they clumsily tried to edge the ceiling with painter's tape.

"Reinforcements have arrived!" Julia called out, setting the drinks on a drop cloth.

Elias wiped his forehead with the back of his wrist, grinning. "Thank God. Mia is a tyrant with the roller brush."

"I am a visionary," Mia corrected, swatting him playfully with a clean rag.

Julia picked up a brush and began painting the trim.

She listened to the banter between her daughter and son-in-law. There was no undercurrent of hostility. There were no barbed insults disguised as jokes. There was just effortless, genuine partnership.

"You know," Mia said, stepping back to admire the freshly painted wall. "I want to put a big, massive dining table right there. One that seats at least ten people."

"We only have three chairs," Elias pointed out.

"We'll fill it," Mia said confidently, looking at Julia. "We're going to build a loud, messy, happy family in this room."

Julia smiled, painting the baseboard, her heart swelling with an indescribable, grounded joy.
