Chapter 2 - Beneath the Balcony

|

The night I fell from our third-floor balcony, Adrian and I had been arguing over missing household financial documents. When I demanded answers, he grabbed my wrist tightly. Vivian had appeared right behind me in the shadow of the doorway. Then, the wrought-iron railing I had leaned against hundreds of times suddenly tore loose from the stone fascia.

They called it a tragic architectural accident to the responding paramedics.

Adrian secretly called it a failed financial investment.

But both of them had forgotten who I was before I became his quiet, obedient wife.

I had spent twelve years working as a high-level forensic accountant, uncovering hidden offshore accounts, forged executive signatures, and multi-million-dollar fraud buried beneath respectable corporate names. Before the ambulance even reached the emergency room doors, I knew that balcony railing had been deliberately tampered with.

So I began collecting evidence from my hospital bed.

A sympathetic nurse had slipped a silent emergency alert button directly into my left palm early that morning. She thought it was there in case Adrian became verbally threatening.

She didn’t know my private investigators were already stationed right inside the hospital corridor.

When Vivian entered the room a few minutes later, she locked the door behind her with a heavy metallic click. Adrian picked up the dense feather pillow from the side chair.

“Make it look peaceful,” Vivian whispered, stepping closer to watch. “The doctors will think her lungs simply collapsed from the trauma.”

He lowered the white pillow down toward my face.

I counted silently in my head.

One.

Two.

Three.

At ten, I squeezed the button in my hand with every ounce of strength I had left.

The heavy door burst open with a deafening slam. Hospital security officers stormed in, followed immediately by three private investigators carrying hidden video recordings, verified bank wire transfers, forged insurance documents—and crystal-clear photographs of Adrian paying a local contractor to weaken the balcony bolts three days prior.

Adrian’s smug face completely collapsed into sheer terror.

My husband had spent months preparing my funeral. He never realized he was actually preparing the evidence that would bury him alive in a state penitentiary.
