Chapter 19 - Whispering Shadows

|

Lena immediately opened her secure laptop, ran the digital scan of the second signature through the state notary index, and waited for the system to process the handwriting match.

The system chimed. A name popped up on Lena’s screen.

Lena stared at the monitor, her face turning completely pale. She looked up at me, her eyes filled with sheer disbelief.

“Hannah…” Lena whispered, her voice shaking slightly.

“Who is it, Lena?” I demanded, a terrible, icy dread pooling in the pit of my stomach.

Lena turned the laptop screen toward me.

The name registered as the second authorized signature on the secret offshore account—the person who had been co-signing quarterly withdrawals of Thomas Mercer’s multi-million-dollar fortune for six years—was a name I knew better than my own.

Robert Vance.

My father.

The room seemed to violently tilt on its axis. The air rushed out of my lungs as if I had been thrown off the balcony all over again.

“Dad?” I choked out, my voice barely a whisper. “No… no, that’s impossible. My father is a retired high school math teacher! He has nothing to do with the Mercer family financial trust!”

“Robert Vance was listed as the co-trustee of The Harbor Foundation when it was incorporated fifteen years ago,” Lena read from the official state records, her voice heavy with grim professional duty.

Suddenly, memories I had buried deep in my mind came flooding back with terrifying clarity.

My father was the one who introduced me to Adrian twelve years ago at a charity dinner.

My father was the one who encouraged me to quit my high-paying corporate auditing job in New York and move back to our hometown to marry Adrian.

My father was the one who insisted on holding onto my old silver laptop for the last two years, claiming he needed it for 'tax storage.'

He hadn't brought me the laptop to help me recover. He had brought it to see if I had discovered the hidden MERCER_LETTER_2004 file.
