Chapter 1 - The Hospital Room Trap

|
My husband stood beside my hospital bed, performing grief for the nurses after the “accident” he had arranged to kill me. The moment we were alone, he confessed everything—unaware that I had turned my recovery room into a death trap for his freedom.
Everyone thought I was unconscious beneath layers of heavy plaster and thick bandages. My ribs were shattered. My spine was damaged. Each shallow breath sent white-hot fire searing through my chest. To anyone watching, I was completely helpless—a broken woman unable to speak, move, or defend herself.
That was exactly what Adrian believed.
Whenever a doctor entered the room, Adrian squeezed my cold hand and whispered, “Stay with me, Hannah. Please don't leave me.” He even cried on command, wiping his eyes like a devoted husband terrified of losing the love of his life.
Then the heavy wooden door clicked shut.
His fingers instantly released mine, dropping my hand onto the thin blanket like trash.
“You were supposed to die,” he murmured directly beside my ear, his tone dropping into a chilling, calm venom. “The fall from the balcony should’ve finished you on impact.”
My heart slammed against my fractured ribs, but I kept my face utterly still, forcing my breathing to stay rhythmically slow.
Adrian chuckled softly, a dry, cold sound that vibrated in the quiet room.
“I doubled your life insurance policy six months ago,” he whispered, leaning closer. “Claire and I were going to start over in California. Do you understand now? You became far more valuable to me dead than alive.”
Claire.
The woman he had sworn for two years was “just a rising coworker” at his marketing firm.
Suddenly, every warning sign I had deliberately ignored came rushing back—his secret late-night phone calls, his unexplained cash withdrawals, and the cruel way his mother, Vivian, had humiliated me at dinner while Adrian sat silently beside her.

Now I finally understood the truth. Vivian wasn’t merely protecting her son’s dirty affair.
She was helping him plan my murder.
