Chapter 17 - The Trap Behind the Trap

Martin Shaw let out a long, tired sigh that seemed to age him ten years in a single moment.
“I never blackmailed anyone, Hannah,” Martin said, his voice flat. “And I didn't help Vivian steal a single penny.”
“Then explain the six hundred thousand dollars!” Lena ordered sternly from beside my bed.
“The money wasn't coming from Vivian,” Martin revealed quietly. “Vivian thought she controlled Northstar, but she was a fool. She only ever saw the surface accounts.”
I frowned, my mind rapidly re-evaluating the financial architecture. “What do you mean?”
“Northstar Advisory Group wasn't created by Vivian or Adrian,” Martin said, looking directly into the camera. “And it wasn't created to steal money from the trust.”
“Then who created it?” I asked.
“Thomas Mercer,” Martin revealed. “Nine years ago, before he died.”
The room fell completely silent.
“Thomas created Northstar?” I echoed, utterly stunned. “But in his letter to me, he warned me about Northstar! He told me to ask Adrian why it existed!”
“Because Thomas was playing a double game!” Martin explained intensely. “Months before Thomas suffered his stroke, he discovered that Vivian had secretly taken out fraudulent loans using their family commercial properties as collateral. Thomas knew that if he filed for divorce immediately, Vivian’s creditors would force the liquidation of all family assets, leaving Adrian with nothing.”
“So Thomas created Northstar as a secret holding entity,” I realized, the pieces finally coming together in my head. “He moved three million dollars of trust capital into Northstar to protect it from Vivian’s creditors!”
“Precisely!” Martin exclaimed. “Thomas made me the secret secondary manager of Northstar. The quarterly payments to The Harbor Foundation were actually transfers into an offshore trust fund set up to pay for Adrian’s future, completely shielded from Vivian’s reach!”

“Then why didn't you tell Adrian after Thomas died?” Lena demanded.
Martin looked at me with deep pity. “Because the moment Thomas died, Vivian convinced Adrian to sign over power of attorney. If I had revealed the existence of the secondary offshore trust to Adrian, he would have handed it directly to his mother within twenty-four hours! I was protecting Thomas’s legacy from his own son’s utter stupidity!”
