Chapter 7 - A Father's Whispering Voice

|

After Detective Hale left, the room fell into a deep silence.

I leaned my head back against the pillow, listening to the rain pattering against the windowpane. In the quiet, my mind drifted back to my father.

Daniel Mercer was a carpenter by trade—a quiet, deliberate man who smelled of cedar chips, coffee, and linseed oil. After my mother passed away when I was twelve, Dad raised me alone in the two-story brick house on Hawthorne Lane.

I remembered sitting on his workbench when I was sixteen, watching him carefully restore an old antique cabinet.

“Dad,” I had asked him then, “why do you measure everything three times before you cut?”

Dad had looked up, his warm brown eyes crinkling at the corners.

“Because once you make a cut, Ellie, you can’t un-cut it,” he had said softly. “Impulsive people make mistakes because they rush to react. But if you're patient, if you observe the grain of the wood and take your time, you build something that lasts forever.”

He had applied that exact philosophy to everything in his life—including his security systems.

When Julian first started dating me, Dad had been polite, but distant. He never openly criticized Julian, but he watched him carefully.

“Patience preserves truth, Ellie,” Dad had told me months before his cancer diagnosis. “People can put on a show for a short time. But if you stay calm and quiet, their true nature always reveals itself.”

Dad had known. He had sensed the hidden greed beneath Julian’s charming smile long before I ever did. He couldn't stop me from falling in love, but he had built a fortress around me to protect me when the storm finally hit.

I touched the small silver locket around my neck containing my father's picture.

“Thank you, Dad,” I whispered to the empty room. “I’m measuring three times now.”
