Chapter 18 - Thirty-One Years Ago

|
The truth that unfolded from those thirty-year-old letters was more twisted than anything I could have imagined.
Decades ago, before my father met my mother, Evelyn had tried to trick my father into a fraudulent land partnership. When Dad discovered her corruption, he severed all ties with her and bought out her share of the Hawthorne Lane property legally, cutting her out completely.
Evelyn had spent the last thirty years bitter, brooding over the loss of a prime property that eventually grew to be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
When she realized her son, Julian, had met me years later, she didn't stop him. She encouraged him. She pushed Julian to target me, planning to use her son to finally claim the house she felt she had been robbed of thirty years ago.
“It was never an accident,” Sarah said, holding the letters. “Julian meeting you at that coffee shop wasn't chance. Evelyn orchestrated it. She sent him after you.”
I looked at the cassette tape resting in the box. Written on the plastic label in my father's handwriting were the words: EVELYN BENNETT - CONFESSION OF FRAUD 1995.

My father had kept the proof of her past crimes hidden in the garage wall for thirty years, knowing that one day, Evelyn’s greed might return to haunt his family.
“This changes everything,” Detective Hale declared, taking the box. “This proves long-term stalking, conspiracy to commit grand theft, and premeditated intent. Evelyn Bennett isn't just an accomplice. She’s the mastermind.”
