Chapter 6 - The Detective in Room 412

|

At precisely nine o'clock the next morning, Detective Marcus Hale entered my rehabilitation room. He was a broad-shouldered man in his early fifties with tired eyes, a weathered leather jacket, and a notebook tucked into his inner pocket.

Beside him walked Denise, a hospital social worker assigned to safeguard my case.

“Mrs. Bennett,” Detective Hale said, taking off his hat. “I’m Detective Hale. Your attorney provided my office with digital files late last night.”

“Did you watch them?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly.

“I did,” Hale said quietly, pulling a chair closer to my bed. “I’ve been on the force for twenty-two years, Mrs. Bennett. I’ve seen a lot of dark things, but what happened in your kitchen was monstrous.”

He opened his notebook and clicked his pen.

“I need your official statement to attach to the arrest warrants.”

I took a deep breath, looking down at my bandaged hands.

“Julian wanted the house on Hawthorne Lane,” I began clearly. “My father, Daniel Mercer, built that home with his own hands. He paid off the mortgage before he passed away and left it exclusively to me in a separate trust.”

“Did Julian pressure you often?” Detective Hale asked.

“Every day since my father died,” I recalled. “He insisted we refinance it to fund his 'business investments.' When I refused, he brought his mother, Evelyn, into the house to pressure me further. They isolated me. They controlled my schedule.”

I looked Detective Hale directly in the eyes.

“On the night of the attack, I told him I would never sell my father's house. Julian grabbed my shoulders and shoved me backward into the boiling stockpot. Evelyn sat at the table and watched me burn. She took my phone so I couldn't call 911.”

Detective Hale wrote down every word, his jaw tightening with every sentence.

“What about the pantry camera?” he asked.

“Julian unhooked it immediately after the attack,” I said. “He thought he destroyed the only proof. He didn't know about my father's hidden backup system in the garage.”

Detective Hale closed his notebook with a heavy thud.

“We have enough for attempted murder, aggravated assault on a pregnant person, and corporate fraud,” Hale declared. “We’re picking them up today.”
