Chapter 13 - Words from Beyond

|

I sat by the window and began to read my father's words.

My dearest Ellie,

If you are reading this letter, it means I am no longer with you, and it means that the man you chose to marry has shown you his true face.

Tears immediately welled in my eyes as I recognized my father's warm, familiar voice in the writing.

I am writing this because three weeks ago, Julian came to visit me at my workshop while you were at work. He asked me to alter my will. He wanted me to put the Hawthorne Lane house into a joint trust for both of you, claiming it was for your 'financial security.'

I looked into his eyes, Ellie, and I saw a man who did not view you as a partner, but as a transaction. I refused his request.

I wanted to tell you immediately, my sweet girl, but I knew how happy you were planning your wedding. I prayed that I was wrong about him. I prayed that his request was just a foolish mistake born of youth. But a father knows.

I built that house with my hands, Ellie, but more importantly, I locked it under your name alone so that no matter what happens in this life, you will always have a sanctuary that belongs to you. Love should make your world larger, Ellie, not slowly convince you that you are selfish for having boundaries.

If he tries to take it from you, fight him. You have my strength inside you. You are my daughter, and you are stronger than any fire.

All my love forever,

May you like

Dad.

I pressed the letter against my chest, weeping silently. He had known all along. He had shielded me even from beyond the grave.
