Chapter 18 - The Ambush

Explosions rocked the stone chapel above, sending dust and debris raining down through the ceiling ventilation shafts.
"Cover the Chairwoman!" Sal roared to his men as heavy gunfire erupted near the stone staircase outside the vault.
Sal’s tactical guards took up defensive positions at the steel vault door, returning fire through the smoky doorway. Sparks flew everywhere as high-caliber rounds slammed against the reinforced steel walls.
"We need to evacuate through the emergency tunnel!" Sal shouted over the deafening noise, pointing toward a small circular hatch in the back of the server room.
I shoved the hourglass drive into my coat pocket and ran toward the hatch with Sal right behind me.
Before Sal could turn the hatch handle, the reinforced vault door was blown off its hinges with a flash-bang grenade. The blast wave threw Sal and me onto the floor, ringing in our ears as dense smoke filled the room.
Through the haze, four figures dressed in sleek white tactical suits stepped into the vault, holding silenced automatic rifles.
Walking behind them was a tall, elegant woman with icy blonde hair, wearing a white fur coat and holding a silver pistol. She wore a golden ring on her index finger engraved with a serpent—the symbol of The Sovereign.
She looked down at me lying on the floor, her red lips curving into a cold, amused smile.
"Victoria Vance," the woman spoke in a smooth, European accent. "Or should I say, the new keeper of Aegis? I must admit, you've survived far longer than we anticipated."

Sal tried to reach for his dropped sidearm, but one of the white-suited guards stepped on his wrist, pinning him down and holding a rifle to his head.
"Don't move, old man," the guard barked.
