Chapter 8 - The Hidden Witness

By the second day, the heavy surgical drugs had begun to wear off, leaving me with a clear mind and a body that felt completely battered. My left arm was encased in a thick fiberglass cast from my knuckles to above my elbow, held together internally by two titanium plates and eight screws.
Vincent sat nearby, drinking black coffee from a paper cup while reviewing documents presented to him by his chief legal advisor, a sharp-featured woman named Rachel Stein.
“How are the police handling Ethan’s statement?” I asked, leaning back against my pillows.
Rachel looked up, her blue eyes analytical and cold. “Ethan and his mistress are claiming that you initiated a violent domestic dispute because of mental instability related to your pregnancy. They told the detectives that you fell against the bathroom door while trying to attack Vanessa.”
I squeezed my eyes shut, a bitter taste filling my mouth. “I knew it. It’s my word against theirs. Ethan always makes sure there are no witnesses.”
Vincent set his coffee cup down on the tray table with a sharp clack.
“He made a mistake, Lena,” Vincent said calmly.
I frowned, looking at him. “What mistake?”
Vincent reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, clear plastic evidence bag. Inside was a compact, white electronic device with a tiny camera lens mounted on the front.
My breath caught in my throat. “The home security camera... Ethan bought that two years ago, but he unhooked it after three months. He said the cloud subscription was too expensive.”
“Ethan unplugged the living room monitor,” Rachel corrected, taking the bag from Vincent. “He was arrogant enough to believe that disconnecting the wall unit turned the device off completely. But the camera model he installed had an internal lithium battery backup and a built-in cellular data chip that automatically uploaded motion-activated events to an offsite server.”
I stared at the small plastic box, my heart pounding violently against my ribs. “It was recording?”
“The police digital forensics team executed a search warrant on the server last night,” Rachel said, her voice dropping into a low, triumphant whisper. “They recovered four hours of high-definition footage from your apartment.”
My hands began to shake. “They saw it?”
“They saw everything, Lena,” Vincent said, his voice laced with a dark, terrible satisfaction. “They watched him grab your arm. They heard the bone snap. They watched Vanessa laugh while you bled on the floor. And they recorded every word Ethan said about leaving you there to teach you how to obey.”

I covered my mouth as a sob escaped me—not of grief, but of profound, overwhelming liberation.
The lie was dead. Ethan could never hurt me again.
