Chapter 19 - The Snake in the Garden

|
That night, the grand dining room of Vincent Moretti’s private estate in Long Island was lit by a crystal chandelier.
Marcus Vance, a distinguished man with silver hair and a expensive tailored suit, sat at the head of the long mahogany table. He had arrived expecting a high-level emergency meeting with Vincent regarding the corporate scandal surrounding his daughter Vanessa’s arrest.
He poured himself a glass of vintage red wine, trying to mask the nervous twitch in his left eyelid.
“Vincent,” Marcus said smoothly as my father walked into the room, followed by Paul and two armed guards. “I came as soon as you called. This business with Vanessa and Ethan Hayes... it’s a tragedy. My daughter was manipulated by that boy! I assure you, my firm is doing everything to help Lena!”
Vincent didn't sit down. He stood at the head of the table, resting his hands on the back of a high wooden chair.
“Do you remember thirty years ago, Marcus?” Vincent asked softly. “When my wife left New York with my baby girl?”
Marcus swallowed hard, clearing his throat. “Of course, Vincent. It was a tragic time for all of us.”
“I spent thirty years grieving that loss,” Vincent continued, his voice dangerously low. “I built an empire, I made hundreds of millions of dollars, but every night I slept in an empty house, wondering if my daughter was safe.”
“I know, Vincent... I was there with you,” Marcus said, raising his glass.
“And five years ago,” Vincent’s eyes locked onto Marcus’s face with terrifying precision, “you found my daughter serving pancakes in a diner. And instead of telling me... you gave her address to a coward and told him to break her.”
Marcus dropped his wine glass.
The crystal shattered across the white linen tablecloth, dark red wine spreading like a pool of blood.
“Vincent... no! That’s... that’s a lie!” Marcus stammered, scrambling backward in his chair as his face turned the color of ash. “Who told you that?! Paul is lying to you!”
Paul stepped forward, tossing a thick stack of bank statements and encrypted server logs directly onto the ruined tablecloth.
“The Swiss authorities froze your offshore accounts two hours ago, Marcus,” Paul said coldly. “We have the wire transfers. We have the emails between you and Ethan Hayes detailing how you planned to split Aurelia Holdings after Lena’s death.”
Marcus backed away toward the curtained windows, his hands shaking uncontrollably. “Vincent... please! We’ve been friends for forty years! I made a mistake! It was greed! Just let me leave the country! I’ll give everything back!”
Vincent looked at his old friend with an expression of cold, absolute disgust.
“My daughter crawled out of a coal chute with a shattered bone because of your greed, Marcus,” Vincent said quietly. “You didn't just betray me. You tried to murder my family.”
Vincent turned his back on Marcus, walking toward the grand double doors.
“Paul,” Vincent said without stopping.
