Chapter 17 - The Shadow Behind Ethan

|

While Ethan was breaking down under police interrogation, a secondary investigation was quietly taking place inside Vincent’s private headquarters in Lower Manhattan.

I had been discharged from the hospital six days after Sofia’s birth. My arm was still in a cast, and my abdominal surgical site was healing, but I was strong enough to sit in a leather armchair in my father’s private library.

Paul set a laptop on the mahogany desk between Vincent and me.

“We ran a complete deep-web trace on Ethan’s personal server,” Paul explained, typing rapidly on the keyboard. “Ethan was a mid-level accountant. He was greedy, arrogant, and cruel, but he wasn't smart enough to bypass Aurelia Holdings’ offshore encryption firewalls on his own.”

Vincent’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. “Someone fed him the information.”

“Precisely,” Paul said, pulling up an encrypted email chain originating from an anonymous IP address in Switzerland. “Five years ago, six weeks before Ethan ‘accidentally’ met Lena in that grocery store, he received a detailed dossier containing Lena’s location, her mother’s medical records, and the secret terms of the Aurelia Holdings trust.”

My heart hammered against my ribs. “Someone set me up? Someone inside my father’s organization?”

“Look at the digital signature on the bottom of the raw data files,” Paul said, highlighting a line of code on the screen.

Vincent leaned closer, his face turning into a mask of pure, murderous rage.

The digital signature belonged to an internal legal firm that had managed Vincent’s private accounts for twenty years—a firm led by a man named Marcus Vance.

Vanessa Vance’s father.

I gasped, covering my mouth. “Vanessa... she wasn't just Ethan’s mistress.”

“She was the inside operative,” Paul confirmed coldly. “Marcus Vance discovered the trust five years ago. He realized he couldn't steal the money directly without Vincent finding out. So he used his daughter to manipulate Ethan into marrying Lena, intending to split the six hundred million dollars three ways once Lena was eliminated.”

Vincent stood up slowly, his hands resting flat on the mahogany desk. The air in the room became thick with lethal tension.

“Marcus Vance was like a brother to me,” Vincent whispered, his voice vibrating with terrifying power. “I paid for his daughter’s college. I bought his house in the Hamptons. And he sent his daughter to help a monster break my child’s arm.”

“What are we going to do, Dad?” I asked, my voice steady and cold.

Vincent looked at me, his eyes gleaming like polished obsidian.

“We’re going to invite Marcus Vance to dinner,” Vincent said softly. “And we’re going to let him watch his entire world burn.”
