Chapter 3 - The Midnight Delivery

|
The catalyst for the horrific violation of my hair had occurred just twenty-four hours earlier, under the cloak of night.
I had been struggling to sleep, my mind racing with anxiety about the unpaid utility bills I had found stuffed in the kitchen drawer, addressed to Michael but hidden from me. I went downstairs to make a cup of chamomile tea, hoping the warm liquid would soothe my nerves.
As the kettle began to whistle, I heard the crunch of gravel in the driveway. I peered through the kitchen blinds and saw a rusted, unmarked white van idling in the dark. A man stepped out, looking nervously over his shoulder, carrying two massive, unmarked duffel bags.
Vanessa had hurried out the side door, handing the man a thick envelope of cash before dragging the heavy bags into the garage.
When she came back inside, I was standing by the kitchen island.
“Vanessa,” I said softly. “Who was that man at this hour? What was in those bags?”
She froze, her face instantly flushing with defensive rage. She unzipped one of the bags, revealing a dozen seemingly identical luxury designer handbags, wrapped in cheap plastic.
“It’s my new supplier, Eleanor. Not that it’s any of your business,” she snapped.
“A supplier delivering at midnight? For cash?” I pressed, genuinely concerned. “Are those bags legitimate? You could get into serious legal trouble.”
“Are you calling me a criminal?” Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing through the quiet house.
Michael had rushed downstairs, instantly taking his wife's side.

“You questioned the packages,” Michael spat at me now, recalling the event as he stood in my bedroom doorway. “You asked about the bank calls. You embarrassed Vanessa in front of her supplier.”
I looked from my son to his wife, finally understanding something terrible. They didn't see my questions as motherly concern. They saw them as a threat to their illicit kingdom, and they believed my quiet kindness had made me weak.
