Chapter 13 - The Final Morning

|

Friday morning arrived exactly three days to the hour after Vanessa had stood over my bed with scissors.

I woke up early, feeling a strange, hollow calm. I dressed meticulously in a tailored charcoal gray pantsuit, paired with a silk ivory blouse. I applied my makeup with care, my silver hair framing my face like polished armor. I was not a mother today. I was the executioner.

At exactly nine o'clock, Michael marched aggressively into the living room, carrying the thick stack of refinancing papers on a clipboard. Vanessa followed closely behind him, dressed in a pristine cream pantsuit, holding her smartphone up with the camera app open and recording. She clearly expected to capture my humiliating, tearful surrender to show her friends, or perhaps to use as evidence of my "compliance" for the bank.

I sat calmly in the high-backed leather armchair by the fireplace, my hands folded neatly in my lap.

“Sign,” Michael ordered, throwing a heavy black pen onto the coffee table in front of me. “Sign right at the bottom tabs. Then we’ll sit down and discuss exactly which facility you’ll be moving into by the end of the month.”

“I’m not signing anything, Michael,” I said, my voice steady and clear.

Vanessa scoffed, stepping closer with her camera recording my face. “Don't make this ugly, Eleanor. We already have your digital signature on file. This is just a formality. If you fight us, we'll just have you declared incompetent today.”

I didn't blink. I simply looked at the antique grandfather clock ticking softly in the corner of the room. It was 9:02 AM.

“You don't have the authority to declare me anything,” I replied.

Before Michael could raise his voice to threaten me again, the heavy brass doorbell chimed throughout the silent house.
