Chapter 12 - The Calm Before the Storm

|

We spent the next two hours meticulously arranging the trap. We coordinated a meeting at my house for Friday morning at 9:00 AM sharp. David, my CEO, would attend personally, along with the lead bank investigator, a sworn court officer, and Eleanor.

That Thursday evening, I drove back to my house. I left the silk scarf in the passenger seat of my car.

When I walked into the kitchen to prepare dinner, Vanessa was sitting at the island, sipping a glass of expensive red wine she had bought with my credit card. She took one look at my new, sleek silver bob, and her smug expression instantly soured. She was deeply disappointed that I no longer looked like a ragged, broken victim.

“Wow,” Vanessa sneered, swirling her wine. “I see we wasted money at the salon today. Trying to polish a dying star, Eleanor?”

I didn't answer her. I simply began chopping vegetables with rhythmic precision.

Michael walked into the kitchen a few minutes later. He barely glanced at my hair, but his eyes instantly locked onto the heavy, black leather Hawthorne Capital folder I had carelessly tucked beneath my arm when I walked in. I set it down on the counter next to my purse.

“Why do you have that?” Michael asked, his brow furrowing in confusion. “Is that from Hawthorne? Have they been sending debt collection notices here?”

I slowly wiped my hands on a towel and met his eyes. My gaze was completely devoid of maternal warmth.

“You’ll understand everything on Friday morning, Michael,” I said calmly.

For the very first time since he had moved in, his arrogant face changed. A flicker of genuine uncertainty passed behind his eyes.

Vanessa, however, recovered first. She rolled her eyes and took a large gulp of wine. “Oh, please. She’s bluffing. She doesn’t even know what year it is half the time.”

Then, she raised her wineglass mockingly toward me. “Enjoy your final night as queen of the house, Eleanor.”

I smiled softly. She had foolishly mistaken the deafening silence before a guilty verdict for my surrender.
