Chapter 18 - Begging on Broken Knees

Michael watched his expensive, imported espresso machine—bought with stolen loan money—being loaded onto the back of the recovery truck outside. He turned to me, his eyes wide with a manic, desperate terror.
“Mom, please, stop this,” Michael begged, his voice cracking. “Call them off. I’ll repay everything. I swear to God, I’ll work it off. I’ll repay every single cent.”
I looked at him with profound exhaustion. “With what money, Michael? Your accounts are frozen. Your business is dead. Your reputation is ruined.”
His mouth snapped closed. The reality of his absolute poverty finally hit him.
Suddenly, his knees gave out. He hit the expensive Persian rug hard, kneeling at my feet.
“Please,” he whispered, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. “I’m your son. Don't do this to me.”
Seeing her husband kneel, Vanessa dropped to the floor right beside him. She grabbed roughly at the hem of my trousers, sobbing uncontrollably. “Forgive us, Eleanor! We’ll leave today! We’ll pack our things and you’ll never see us again! Just withdraw the fraud charges. Please!”
I looked down at the two of them, groveling on the floor of the house they had tried to steal from me. I expected to feel a massive surge of triumphant vindication. I expected to feel the sweet rush of revenge.
But I felt absolutely nothing. No triumph, no joy. Only the profound, quiet, and heartbreaking end of a long illusion. The boy I had loved was gone, replaced by a greedy stranger.

I gently but firmly pulled my leg away from Vanessa’s desperate grasp.
“You will leave,” I said, my voice echoing in the silent room. “And you will never step foot on this property again. But forgiveness is not immunity. You will face the consequences of your actions.”
