Chapter 18

|

The morning sun felt entirely different today. It wasn't the warm, peaceful glow of a hard-won victory; it was the harsh, unforgiving light of a new war. Chloe stood in the master bedroom of the cabin, strapping a lightweight, custom-fitted kevlar vest beneath her oversized denim jacket. She looked at herself in the mirror, her green eyes reflecting a hardened, unyielding resolve. She refused to be a helpless victim ever again.

"Are you sure you want to do this, Chloe?" Elena asked from the doorway, loading a fresh magazine into her sidearm. "You don't have to step back into the line of fire. I can handle the extraction of the ledger alone."

"Dad left that message for both of us," Chloe replied, pulling her hair back into a tight braid. "You need someone to monitor the digital overwatch, and I know Eleanor's old financial routing protocols better than anyone. I'm coming with you."

Elena offered a curt, proud nod. "We move in ten minutes. The metadata coordinates point to a secure safety deposit box in the heart of downtown Manhattan."

The drive into the city was tense and silent. Chloe sat in the passenger seat, a sophisticated military-grade tablet resting on her lap. She was actively scanning local police frequencies and federal surveillance grids, ensuring their approach remained entirely undetected.

As they navigated the busy, rain-slicked streets of Manhattan, Chloe noticed an anomaly on her perimeter scan.

"Mom," Chloe said, her fingers flying across the glass screen. "We have a tail. Black SUV, heavily tinted windows. It’s been matching our exact speed and lane changes for the past twelve blocks. Their license plate is registered to a shell corporation."

Elena glanced at the rearview mirror, her eyes narrowing as she spotted the aggressive grill of the SUV looming three cars back.

"Project Obsidian," Elena muttered, her grip tightening on the steering wheel. "They must have had a tracking algorithm embedded in the USB drive’s activation code. They know we saw the video."

"What do we do?" Chloe asked, adrenaline spiking in her chest.

"Hold on tight," Elena said, her voice terrifyingly calm. "We lose them."

Elena slammed her foot on the accelerator, throwing the heavy SUV into a sharp, illegal left turn down a narrow, crowded alleyway, the engine roaring as the deadly game of cat and mouse officially began.
