Chapter 16

|

The drive back to their secluded lakeside cabin was wrapped in a comfortable, companionable silence. The tires of Elena’s reinforced SUV hummed smoothly over the wet asphalt, winding through the dense, vibrant autumn forests of upstate New York. For the first time in what felt like a grueling eternity, Elena did not find her eyes constantly darting to the rearview mirror. The immediate threats had been neutralized, the corporate monsters caged, and her daughter was finally safe sitting in the passenger seat. Chloe looked out the window, watching the blur of red and gold leaves, a serene smile playing on her lips.

When they arrived at the cabin, the heavy wooden doors and reinforced steel deadbolts felt less like a prison and more like a true sanctuary. Elena unlocked the door, letting the warm, familiar scent of pine and woodsmoke wash over them. She took off her dress uniform jacket, carefully hanging it on the coat rack, feeling the heavy weight of her military medals finally lift from her weary shoulders.

Before either of them could settle into the plush leather couches, the sharp crunch of gravel outside broke the evening stillness. Elena’s military instincts flared instantly. She moved toward the window, her hand hovering near the concealed holster on her hip.

"Stay back, Chloe," Elena murmured, her eyes scanning the driveway.

A lone, unmarked delivery van sat idling near the gate. A courier stepped out, placed a small, nondescript wooden box on the front porch, and immediately drove away into the gathering dusk. Elena waited a full minute before stepping outside to retrieve it.

She brought the box inside and set it on the kitchen island. Chloe stood a few feet away, her brow furrowed in concern.

"Is it from the federal prosecutor?" Chloe asked, her voice tight.

"No," Elena said, examining the lack of postage or return address. "It’s completely sterile."

Elena used a tactical knife to pry the wooden lid open. Inside, resting on a bed of dark velvet, lay a tarnished silver compass and a small, heavily encrypted USB drive.

"That compass," Chloe whispered, her eyes widening in shock. "That belonged to Dad."

Elena’s heart pounded against her ribs. Her husband had carried that compass on every deployment. She picked up the USB drive, a cold sense of dread creeping into her chest. The war with the Vance Foundation was over, but it seemed Arthur had left them one final battle to fight.
