Chapter 15 - The Unopened Box|

That evening, after Graham had stayed for dinner and helped Lily build a massive LEGO castle in the living room, I sat at my new office desk upstairs.
The house was quiet, filled only with the distant sound of ocean waves crashing against the shore.
I opened the bottom drawer of my desk. Inside lay a small, velvet-lined wooden box—the only thing I had taken from my mother’s house before it was put up for public auction to satisfy her legal judgments.
Inside the box was an old, faded silver key and a small, worn leather diary that had belonged to my father.
I hadn't opened it since the trial ended. I had been too afraid of what other painful family secrets might be resting inside those yellowed pages.
But tonight, I felt strong enough.
I picked up the key, inserted it into the brass lock of the diary, and turned it.
Click.
I opened the front cover. My father’s handwriting filled the pages, dated fifteen years ago, long before he became ill.
I flipped slowly through the pages until I reached an entry dated October 12, 2011.
My eyes scanned the lines. Suddenly, my breath caught in my throat.
“If anything ever happens to me, I have secured the primary safety deposit box at First National Bank under Claire’s name. Eleanor and Vanessa think the trust is all I have left. They don't know about the second vault in Zurich. They don't know the truth about who Vanessa’s real father is...”
I stared at the page. My heart began to hammer violently against my ribs.
May you like
Vanessa’s real father?
I turned the page frantically.
