Chapter 10 - The Stolen Legacy|

I stared at my father’s handwriting at the bottom of the page. The sweeping, familiar cursive brought a sudden sting of tears to my eyes.

“Read section four,” Arthur instructed softly.

I traced my finger down the page until I reached the highlighted paragraph:

“Upon my passing, the primary assets of the Whitmore Commercial Trust, including the estate properties and liquidity accounts valued at approximately $4.8 million, shall be divided equally: 50% to my daughter, Claire Bennett, held in absolute trust for her and her descendants; 50% to my wife, Eleanor Whitmore.”

I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth.

Four point eight million dollars.

My share was two point four million dollars.

“Where was Vanessa?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

“Your father explicitly left Vanessa out of the primary trust,” Graham explained, pointing to a smaller clause lower down. “He left her a flat sum of fifty thousand dollars, stating clearly that he had already paid off her credit debts multiple times during his life.”

The room felt entirely still.

“So when Dad died...” I began, piecing the nightmare together.

“When your father died,” Graham continued, his tone hardening, “your mother and Vanessa hired a crooked probate lawyer to suppress this will. They presented a forged 2018 draft that left everything to your mother. Once your mother had control of the funds, she quietly transferred half of it into Vanessa’s private accounts.”

I covered my face with my hands. The sheer cruelty of it washed over me in crushing waves.

My daughter had spent months in physical therapy using a walker because I couldn't afford the advanced nerve treatment she needed. I had worked thirty-six-hour weekend shifts at a tutoring center, surviving on instant coffee and toast, while my mother and sister lived in luxury on my daughter’s inheritance.

“They knew,” I sobbed softly into my hands. “They knew Lily was sick.”

Graham’s hand closed over mine on the table. His touch was warm, steady, and fierce.

“They knew,” Graham whispered. “And that is why my father and I are personally ensuring that neither of them ever touches a single penny of this money again.”
