Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass|

The sound of crystal shattering against polished marble echoed through the grand ballroom like a gunshot.
Graham Ellison, standing beside his glowing bride at the head table, stared at the massive projector screen suspended behind the DJ booth. His hand remained suspended in mid-air, still shaped as if holding his champagne glass. Slivers of crystal reflected the blue light of the display screen, scattered across the floor like ice.
Beside him, Vanessa Whitmore looked as if she had been turned to stone. The color had drained completely from her face, leaving her heavy bridal makeup standing out like paint on a ghost.
My eight-year-old daughter, Lily, did not flinch. She stood on the wooden platform of the DJ booth, her small hands holding the heavy wireless microphone close to her pale lips. Her pale yellow cardigan hung slightly off her narrow shoulders, but her posture was rigid, unbreakable.
“Mom didn’t know,” Lily’s voice echoed through the high-end speakers, crisp and terrifyingly clear. “She thought we were just coming here to eat cake and be quiet. But I found this in Aunt Vanessa’s bag three weeks ago when she made me clean up her coat.”
A collective gasp rippled through the three hundred high-society guests seated beneath the towering floral arrangements.
“Lily!” I cried out, finally regaining control of my frozen legs. I took three fast steps toward the stage, my heels clicking frantically against the floor. “Lily, sweetie, come down right now!”
“No, Mom,” Lily said, her eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that stopped me in my tracks. “If I come down, she wins. And she told Grandma that you were nothing. She said we were trash.”
Vanessa suddenly broke her silence, a high-pitched, hysterical shriek tearing from her throat.
“GET HER OFF THE STAGE!” Vanessa screamed, gesturing wildly at the security guards standing near the double doors. “She’s a child! She’s crazy! Turn off the power!”
The DJ, a young man hired for the evening, looked back and forth between the bride screaming in rage and the small girl standing calmly on his stage. His hands hovered over the soundboard, completely paralyzed.
“It’s too late, Aunt Vanessa,” Lily said into the mic. “It’s already playing.”
