Chapter 19 - The Choice

“Do not yell at me, Gabriel Salvatore!” Clare shouted back, her voice echoing off the bathroom tiles.
Gabriel froze, shocked by her absolute defiance. Men withered under his anger, but the small, exhausted former nurse stood her ground, her eyes blazing with a fierce, uncompromising fire.
“You don't get to make this decision for me,” Clare continued, stepping directly into his personal space, jabbing a finger into his bare chest. “I spent five years married to a man who controlled every aspect of my life. Who told me where to go, what to do, and what I was allowed to feel. I am not running away again.”
“Clare, it’s not safe here. The Navarros—”
“I don't care about the Navarros!” Clare interrupted fiercely. “I care about the man standing in front of me. The man who dove into a pool fully clothed to play with my daughter. The man who trusted me to feed his motherless son. I love you, Gabriel.”
Gabriel stopped breathing. He stared at her, the walls of his hardened, violent exterior crumbling completely.
“I am not leaving you,” Clare vowed, wrapping her arms around his waist and pressing her face against his chest. “We are a family. We fight the dark together.”
Gabriel let out a ragged, desperate sob, burying his face in her hair. He wrapped his arms around her, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe, anchoring himself to the only light he had left in the world.
“You are going to be the death of me, Clare,” he whispered fiercely.
“No,” she corrected softly, looking up into his tear-filled eyes. “I am going to be the reason you survive.”
Over the next three months, Gabriel made good on his promise. He didn't just fight the Navarros; he eradicated them. He unleashed a brutal, calculated war on the rival cartel, dismantling their operations piece by piece until they unconditionally surrendered.

Clare remained by his side through it all. She didn't flinch from the violence of his world anymore. She embraced her role. She became the untouchable queen of the Miami syndicate, respected by his lieutenants and feared by his enemies. Maya and Leo finally had a stable, fiercely protected family.
The nightmare was officially over.
