Chapter 13 - The Betrayal

|

The peace shattered at exactly 2:14 AM on a moonless Thursday.

Clare was asleep, curled against Gabriel's side in the master suite, wrapped in heavy silk sheets. The silence of the sprawling estate was absolute, a testament to the millions of dollars invested in state-of-the-art security systems.

Then, the sudden, deafening wail of the perimeter alarms tore through the night.

Gabriel was out of bed before Clare even opened her eyes. He didn't stumble or ask questions; his combat instincts were immediate and terrifying. He pulled a heavy assault rifle from a biometric safe hidden behind a painting, tossing a sleek, loaded 9mm handgun onto the bed next to Clare.

“Get dressed. Now,” Gabriel ordered, his voice devoid of any warmth. He was fully the mafia don, cold and calculating.

“Gabriel, what is it?” Clare gasped, pulling on a pair of sweatpants and grabbing the gun with trembling hands.

His tactical radio crackled to life. “Boss! We have a massive breach at the secondary gates!” a panicked guard shouted through the static. “The digital locks were bypassed! It’s the Navarros! They have heavy weapons! They’re inside the perimeter!”

Gabriel’s jaw locked. “Hold the main hallway. I’m moving the family to the safe room.”

“Gabriel, the codes change every hour,” Clare said, terror gripping her throat. “How did they bypass the locks?”

“Someone gave them the encryption keys,” Gabriel growled, throwing a tactical vest over his bare chest. “We have a rat.”

Gunfire erupted downstairs—a chaotic, deafening symphony of automatic weapons tearing through the imported Italian marble and glass. The war had arrived at their doorstep.

“Go to the nursery,” Gabriel commanded, grabbing her arm and pulling her into the hallway. “Get Maya and Leo. Do not stop running until you are inside the panic room. I will hold the stairs.”

“I’m not leaving you!” Clare cried.

“You are protecting our children!” Gabriel roared, his dark eyes blazing with a desperate, ferocious love. “Go!”

Clare didn't argue. She sprinted down the hall, the sound of boots pounding up the grand staircase behind her. She burst into the nursery, scooping a crying Leo into her left arm, and grabbed a terrified Maya by the hand with her right.

“Mommy, what’s that loud noise?” Maya sobbed.

“Just firecrackers, baby,” Clare lied, her heart hammering as she dragged them toward the master suite’s hidden panel.
