Chapter 10 - The Nursery Confessions

The heavy silence in the bedroom was suffocating.
Clare stared at Gabriel, her chest heaving with panicked breaths. The man standing before her was a killer, an apex predator who ruled the Miami underworld. But as he looked at her, his dark eyes filled with a desperate, agonizing vulnerability, the monster vanished entirely.
“Let me explain,” Gabriel whispered, taking a slow, non-threatening step forward.
“There is no explanation for murder, Gabriel,” Clare shot back, tears spilling down her cheeks.
“There is survival,” he corrected gently. He walked past her, sitting heavily on the edge of the plush armchair in the corner of the room, running a hand over his face.
“My wife, Elena, was not killed in a random robbery,” Gabriel confessed, his voice thick with a grief he rarely let surface. “She was assassinated. The Navarro cartel wanted my shipping routes. They put a bomb in her car. I was supposed to be in it. She died because I was not ruthless enough to eliminate them first.”
Clare stopped packing, her hands freezing on the zipper of her duffel bag.
“Leo was cut from her body in the emergency room,” Gabriel continued, looking up at Clare, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “He is my only heir. My only light in this miserable life. The men I execute, the violence I commit... it is the wall I build to ensure the Navarros never get close enough to finish the job.”
He stood up, walking toward her until he was only inches away. He didn't touch her, but his proximity was a physical weight.
“I need someone I can trust, Clare,” he murmured, his voice dropping to a low, raw pitch. “Someone who sees the darkness and doesn't run. Someone who loves my son the way you do.”
Clare looked up into his face. The fear that had driven her to pack her bags was melting, replaced by a profound, terrifying understanding. She had spent five years with a man who hurt her for control. Gabriel hurt others to protect his family.
Slowly, Clare reached out. Her trembling fingers brushed against the strong, sharp line of his jaw.
Gabriel closed his eyes, leaning into her touch with a desperate hunger.

“I’m not running,” Clare whispered.
Gabriel’s eyes snapped open. The tension between them, built over weeks of stolen glances and silent gratitude, finally shattered. He wrapped his massive arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, and kissed her with a fierce, consuming desperation.
