Chapter 3 - The Shadows That Linger

|
Far away, behind the high concrete walls and iron bars of a state penitentiary, two people were sitting in cold, silent cells, counting down the long years of their youth. They had tried to break a gentle soul to elevate their own fake world. Instead, they had awakened the vow of a husband who would burn the world to protect the woman he loved.
Michael and his mother, Beatrice, were serving lengthy sentences for their crimes. The wealth and privilege that had once insulated them from consequences had proven useless in the face of truth and justice. The empire they had built on manipulation and deceit had crumbled, leaving them with nothing but the cold reality of their actions.
I knew they were there, locked away, their lives forever altered by the choices they had made. But their presence, or rather, their absence, no longer cast a shadow over our lives. We had moved on, built a new life, a new legacy, far removed from their toxic influence.
"Do you ever think about them?" Ellen asked quietly, breaking the silence.
I paused, considering her question carefully. "Sometimes," I admitted. "But not with anger or bitterness. Just a lingering sense of justice being served."

"I don't think about them at all," she said, her voice resolute. "They have no power over me anymore."
Her words resonated with me. The power they had once held over her had been shattered, replaced by her own strength and resilience. And as I looked at her, I knew that she was right. They were nothing more than a distant memory, a cautionary tale of what happens when greed and manipulation go unchecked.
