Chapter 2 - A Walk by the Lake

|
After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Ellen and I walked hand-in-hand down the stone path leading toward the estate’s private lake. The water was crystal clear, reflecting the brilliant red and gold leaves of the surrounding trees. The air was crisp and cool, a welcome respite from the warmth of the afternoon sun.
"Are you happy, sweetheart?" I asked softly, wrapping my arm around her waist.
Ellen leaned her head gently against my shoulder, breathing in the crisp, clean autumn air. The tension that had once been a constant companion seemed to have melted away, replaced by a profound sense of tranquility.
"I am peaceful, Robert," she whispered, squeezing my hand tight. "For the first time in my life, I am truly at peace."
We walked in silence for a while, the only sound the crunch of leaves beneath our feet. I looked at her, marveling at her strength and resilience. She had overcome so much, and yet, here she was, standing tall and proud, a beacon of hope for others.
"You've built something incredible here," I said, my voice filled with admiration. "This foundation will change lives."
"We built it, Robert," she corrected me gently. "I couldn't have done it without you."
"I just provided the funding," I replied modestly. "You're the one who poured your heart and soul into this project."

"You provided more than just funding," she said, her eyes meeting mine. "You provided belief. You believed in me when I didn't believe in myself."
Her words touched me deeply. I had always believed in her, even when she had lost faith in herself. And seeing her now, standing strong and confident, validated that belief.
