Chapter 20 - Whispers on the Tide

|

The morning after the wedding, the estate was quiet and bathed in soft dawn light.

Sebastian had gone down to the private marina early to check on the luxury yacht that was scheduled to take us on our three-week honeymoon across the Mediterranean.

I stood in the sunlit master bedroom, wrapped in a plush white robe, humming softly as I packed my leather travel bag.

My phone on the nightstand vibrated softly against the wood.

I walked over and picked it up, expecting a message from Laura or my mother asking about our departure time.

It was an encrypted email from an unlisted international address.

The subject line was blank.

I clicked it open. Attached to the email was a single, high-resolution scanned document dated seven years ago—long before I had ever met Ryan, and long before Sebastian Sterling had walked into my art foundation.

It was an official legal agreement from a corporate law firm in London.

My eyes scanned the elegant typography at the top of the page:

CONFIDENTIAL TRUST AGREEMENT & STIPULATION OF INTENT

Below the title were two primary signatures.

The first signature belonged to my father, Arthur Vance.

The second signature, written in dark, bold black ink, belonged to Sebastian Sterling.

My breath caught in my throat. My hands began to shake as I read the highlighted clause near the bottom of the page:

Clause 4.2: In consideration of the undisclosed equity restructuring of Vance Logistics, Sebastian Sterling agrees to act as a silent guardian over the personal and professional interests of Victoria Vance, ensuring her financial independence and ultimate union within the Sterling estate, effective upon the dissolution of any temporary marital arrangements...

A cold, electric shock ran straight through my veins, freezing the blood in my heart.

The door to the master suite creaked open softly behind me.

I turned around slowly, the phone trembling in my hand, to see Sebastian standing in the doorway holding a tray with two cups of hot coffee and a bouquet of fresh yellow roses.

He looked at my pale face, then down at the glowing phone screen in my hand.

The warm, loving smile on his face slowly vanished, replaced by a quiet, unreadable expression in his cool gray eyes.

"Victoria..." Sebastian whispered softly, stepping into the room.

I looked into the eyes of the man I had just married, my voice barely a whisper in the silent room.

"Sebastian... what did my father sign seven years ago?"
