Chapter 12 - The Unraveling

|
While my life was soaring to heights I had never dreamed of, Ryan and Danielle’s world was slowly crumbling into complete chaos.
Without my steady salary and financial management, Ryan quickly realized that living with Danielle was an absolute nightmare.
Danielle had never held a steady job. She spent money like water—ordering designer baby clothes, hiring expensive party planners for a lavish gender-reveal gala, and demanding that Ryan buy her a luxury condo in Manhattan to match my new lifestyle.
To make matters worse, the viral wedding video had ruined Ryan’s professional reputation.
Clients at his wealth-management firm felt uncomfortable working with a man whose lack of ethics and chaotic personal life had been plastered across national tabloids. He was passed over for senior partner, his commissions dried up, and his savings were rapidly bleeding dry.
My mother called me one afternoon, her voice sounding tired and frail.
"Vicki?" she asked softly. "Do you have a minute?"
I set down my coffee cup. "Hi, Mom. Is everything okay?"
"No," my mother sighed. "Danielle and Ryan are fighting constantly. Ryan moved out of their temporary rental last night and is staying at a motel. Danielle is crying hysterically, demanding that your father and I pay off her credit card debt."
I listened quietly, feeling no satisfaction, only a quiet, sad confirmation.
"Your father told her no," my mother added, her voice cracking with emotion. "He told her she brought this on herself. And... he's right, Vicki. I was wrong to always cover for her. I enabled her until she destroyed her own life."
Tears pricked the back of my eyes. "Thank you for saying that, Mom."
"I miss you, Vicki," my mother wept gently. "Can I come see your new showroom this weekend?"
May you like
"I'd love that, Mom," I said softly. "Come on Saturday."
Hung up the phone, feeling a long-standing knot inside my heart finally untangle. My family was changing, but for the first time, it was changing in a healthy direction.
